Dental Fillings

Dental tooth fillings are a restorative treatment used to improve the appearance and function of teeth affected by decay or damage. Fillings help restore tooth surfaces for efficient biting and chewing, while also protecting the tooth from further damage. With proper care, dental fillings can last for many years, maintaining both the health and aesthetics of your teeth.

Types of Dental Fillings

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are made from a mixture of glass or quartz filler within a resin medium, resulting in a tooth-colored material. Also known as filled resins, composites are often used for small to mid-size restorations. They provide strength, durability, and resistance to fracture, while the color closely matches the patient’s natural teeth, making the dental work nearly invisible.

Glass Ionomers

Glass ionomer fillings are tooth-colored and made from a mixture of acrylic and glass. They release fluoride, which makes them ideal for young children. However, they are weaker than composites and typically last less than five years before needing replacement.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings have been used for decades due to their strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness. They are silver in color, which can be visible when eating, speaking, or smiling, so some patients prefer alternative materials.

The Dental Filling Procedure

During a filling procedure, the dentist removes any decay or damage using a dental handpiece or laser. The tooth surface is cleaned and prepared, and the chosen filling material is placed in the affected area. Once applied, the filling is shaped and polished to match the natural tooth. Most fillings are completed in a single visit.

In some cases, additional support may be needed after a filling, such as a crown, implant, or bridge. Severely damaged or infected teeth may also require a root canal before restoration. The dentist will discuss all filling materials and options with the patient to determine the best choice for each situation.
